What are your requirements for perfect training cookies? For me, it should be small bites, soft, with high-quality ingredients and dogs should go crazy for them. Ideally, they should not cost a fortune and last at least 1 week.
I have seen hundreds of dog cookies recipes, but never had the guts to try it at home. Let’s say my baking skills are very limited. Until I found the silicone baking mat in sale for 6 euro
I started experimenting with various recipes from Facebook groups & friends. I wanted cookies for dog fitness and agility training, so I was trying to find an ingredient for additional energy boost or recovery effect. Turns out, my skills with baking dog treats are just perfect 🙂
Cooked chicken – I usually take the chicken parts, that are used to cook a chicken soup (no seasoning)
How to
Preheat the oven to 200° C with top and lower heat.
Put all ingredients to a blender and mix it to a liquid mixture. The consistency should be similar to pancake dough.
Depending on what amount of chicken you have, the mixture might be too thick. You can add a few tablespoons of water or some other oil. I use 1-2 tbsp. of the WHITE FISH OMEGA-3 oil from Non-Stop Dogwear, but pretty much any liquid oil will do the trick. If the texture is still not right, IÂ just start adding tablespoons of water and mixing, until the dough is liquid enough.
What you need next is a silicone backing mat used for oven instead of the backing paper. I got mine in sale at Tchibo Shop. Depending on what size of the treats you want to make, you can get plenty others for example at Amazon. And depending on your budget you can event get the fancy one in specialised stores for baking dog treats like Collory. For my dogs the size of treats from the Tchibo mat is perfect. You put the mat flat on a surface with the openings facing up. This is why the mixture needs to be liquid – start pouring it on the mat and spread it with a silicone spatula across the whole mat. Make sure the liquid fills up each opening.
Place the mat in the middle section of the oven and bake for about 30-35 min. Check occasionally  (do not open the oven). The surface of the cookies should be golden, not too dark. Take the mat out and place it on a paper in backing tray. The treats will probably pop-out by themselves. You should be able to easily get them out of the mat. If not, the backing time was too short.
If you want to use the cookies in the next few days, they are soft & ready-to-eat 🙂 However, if you want to store some of it for later, you need to „dry“ them. Turn on or let the oven cool down to 60-90° C. Just leave the cookies on the paper and put the backing tray back in the oven for 30-45 min until they are „crunchy“. For my oven works the best 90°C, I leave it a slice open and put the cookies in for 30-40 minutes. Let the cookies cool down. They should be hard on the surface, but usually soft inside. Put them in a jar, and they will last several weeks.
You can experiment with various ingredients, add veggies like carrots or spinach. You can add cheese instead of the chicken or use fish. I use FitDog Recovery Potato powder to add the maltodextrin for muscle recovery. For extra energy boost from fat & protein, you can use the FitDog Energy & Rehydrate powder. If you have a small dog, you might want to use less FitDog powder and more flour, depending on the amount of treats you use during training.
